FARMING IS ALL ABOUT HARVESTING A HIGH STRONG YIELD - Dr Rose Gidado

The Country Coordinator, Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) in Africa, Nigeria chapter Dr Rose Gidado in an exclusive interview conducted by the
Living environment crew and reporter Ada Achanya talks on the importance of Biotechnology and the Environment.

Excerpts:

Q1: What is Agricultural Biotechnology?

Ans: Agricultural Biotechnology is the application of scientific principles to the development and breeding of crops for the purpose of improving them to increase productivity or for resistance against insect, pest and diseases.

Q2: What are the benefits of Agricultural Biotechnology as it concerns issues of agricultural modification and scientific advancement?

Ans: The benefits of agricultural biotechnology are enormous because it enables farmers to have access to quality seeds that will results to quality yields, disease resistant, herbicide and drought tolerant crops, etc.

The application of modern biotechnology tools in Agriculture also enables the production of nutritionally enhanced crops that  enables consumer have access to foods that are biofortified with the necessary micro nutrients that are needed by the body for optimum daily function.

Q3: What are the essential benefits of GMOs

Ans: GMOs are the products of agricultural biotechnology, particularly, Genetically Modified Tools.

GM crops, animals or microorganisms can  help in environmental restoration, a process called bioremediation. For example, bioremediation can be applied in the Niger Delta region where we have oil spillage and farmers cannot cultivate crops because of the environmental pollution which enable crops not to grow on their own.

Genetically modified organisms can be used to mop up the oil from the soil or land to enable crops grow there.

Also vaccine can be develop from GMOs to give life back to people especially in this COVID-19 pandemic.

Q4: How is GMO used positively to enhance the environment and the agricultural part of it

Ans: GMOs curtail the challenges affecting our crops and environment due to the effect of climate change. “Farming is all about harvesting high strong Yield”

To have a high yield, farmers in Nigeria needs the application of biotechnology on the indigenous crops. It’s almost impossible to be successful in Agriculture without the application of Biotechnology. India and Nigeria were in the same class before but now they have move far because of technology.

Q5: We will like to know the crops we have deficit of?

Ans: Our productivity is very low not only in Nigeria but in Africa as a whole. Nigeria has most of the crops like Cowpea in deficit of 500,000 tons, Rice 1.2 million tons because the right thing are not being done.
